Rutland was built out of marble, and in a hard winter the city looks made of the same cold white it is buried in — Otter Creek running black between the banks, Pine Hill quiet above the rooftops. Bin Force One clears the way through it: plowing driveways and business lots, opening entrances and loading areas, shoveling walks and stairways, spreading sand and salt on the slick spots. Downtown lots have to be worked around parked cars and pushed to a corner that won't flood the pavement when it turns. Storms coming off the Killington side drop wet, dense snow that stacks quickly and sets hard. A lot opened before the first car of the morning is the kind of work you can look back at.
