Late October along the Third Branch, and the hills above Randolph go the color of struck brass until one hard wind takes it all down at once. This is tree country, and Timber Pros Tree Works works it — removals and pruning, planting and tree installation, stump grinding, brush mulching and brush hogging that opens a grown-in field back to sky, with woodchips left behind in fragrant heaps. When the valley turns white, the same trucks go to plowing and snow removal, drives cut open along Route 12 while the hollows are still blue-dark and the mailbox is the only thing showing. The rest of the year runs on spring and fall cleanups, mowing, fruit trees pruned back into shape, driveways installed and set right again, and storm-damage work when the wind comes through. There is a plain, physical satisfaction in the result: a stump gone back to soil, a yard that holds its season, a hillside a person can walk clean across in boots — from Randolph out across all of Vermont and New Hampshire.
