Putney sits on the west bank of the Connecticut, with orchards on the hillside above it and Sacketts Brook cutting down through the middle of town. It is generous growing country — long river-valley summers, warm nights, grass that answers to almost anything done for it. Green Mountain Gardening works with that generosity, mowing, trimming and keeping lawns and grounds in order from the first cleanup of spring to the last leaf haul. A yard here can go from shaggy to composed in an afternoon, and the change is worth standing back to look at. Between the orchard rows and the river, Putney is a fine place to be outdoors, and a kept lawn is part of that.
