Afternoon wind comes across Memphremagog out of the north and cools Newport off just when the day has gotten long. Down by the water the grass fills up with towels and kids and bicycles lying on their sides. Stubbs Dog House keeps lawns cut and kept around the city — weekly mowing, trimming around posts and poles and play equipment, edging along the walks, and cleanups at the front and back of the season. A lawn people actually use has to be mown a little differently than one that only gets looked at: closer, cleaner, no surprises underfoot. Getting that right for a whole summer is the job, and it is a good one to have in a lake town.
