Bluff Mountain stands over Newport, and the town's yards run downhill from it in long green strips toward the water. Rusty's Electric mows those strips — the flat lots near Main Street, the pitched ones out along the beach road — and trims the corners no mower can reach. Summer evenings this far north hold their light until nearly nine, which is time enough to finish a lawn properly and then stand and look at it. Spring and fall cleanups bookend the year, hauling off whatever the wind brings down out of the maples. The result is simple and it lasts: a yard square with its own edges, one week after the next.
