The first genuinely warm Saturday in Newport is a town-wide event — everybody out at once, the street busy, the hill down to the water full of light. Pick & Shovel is a hardware and supply store in the middle of that, and its lawn work runs from that very morning through to the last leaf. Mowing on a weekly turn, close trimming along walls and fence lines, mulch into the beds, and clearing out when the season opens and again when it shuts down. There is an honest pleasure in a job where you can stand at the end of a drive and see exactly what you did. The lake sits at the bottom of the hill the whole while, changing color by the hour.
