There is a week in April when the ice goes out of Memphremagog and the Barton River runs high and brown into the bay. That is when Northern Vermont Landscape gets going — rakes first, then mowers, bringing Newport yards up out of a winter that overstayed. Through the summer the mowing runs week to week, with string trimming around fence posts and foundation stones and edges cut sharp enough to read from the road. Autumn turns it all to leaf work, cleanups that leave a lawn bare and tidy before the cold sets in for good. Short season, full effort; the grass up here only gets so many months and none of them go to waste.
