The Barton River comes into Memphremagog through a wide marsh, and in May the redwings hold the cattails and shout at everything that passes. That is the sound of a season opening in Newport. Newport Farm & Garden works the ground side of it — lawn mowing once the frost has finished, trimming and edging, seed and feeding into thin ground, and the clearing away of all the sand and grit that winter left behind. Grass comes on fast when a northern spring finally commits to itself. Watching a beaten-up March yard turn thick and even by the middle of June never really gets old.
