Newport sits on a bluff with Lake Memphremagog laid out below it, a long blue road of water running north until it slips into Quebec. Legacy Signs of Vermont keeps lawns here through the short, generous Kingdom summer, mowing yards that tilt toward the water and holding a clean line where grass meets gravel. Trimming and edging finish each visit, and the reward is a dooryard that looks looked-after when the late light comes off the lake. Leaves fall early this far north, and they get raked and hauled before the first hard freeze locks the ground down. Ordinary work, kept up week to week, on a shore worth the trouble.
