Newfane's common is one long white rectangle of courthouse, church and old inn, and the whole town seems to arrange itself around it. Adam Chase Lawn Care works both sides of the calendar there. Summer is mowing, trimming and cleanups while the West River runs low and green through the valley; winter is plowing, shoveling and sanding when weather comes over the hills and settles in for the night. A driveway opened at first light in February is a small, complete piece of work — the day made possible before anyone is awake to see it. Come May that same driveway gets its edges recut and its leaves hauled off. Two seasons, one village, both worth doing carefully.
