First light comes late to Mount Holly, climbing over the ridge and down through the spruce before it ever reaches the dooryards, and by then Yankee Home Management is already at work — mower decks warming, a drive plowed open to bare gravel, a porch and a mailbox cleared so the day can simply begin. They keep lawns and gardens through the green months, take snow off driveways, lots, sidewalks, porches, mailboxes and roofs when the mountain gives it, and handle excavation and site work from small digs to full site development, along with roofing, siding, fencing and sheetrock replacement. For second homes and rentals they carry the keys and the on-call phone around the clock, checking on quiet houses, making the repairs, watching over places whose owners are somewhere else. Their ground runs from Mount Holly out to Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Weston, East Wallingford and Okemo — hill towns of stone wall and hayfield and steep hardwood. There is a plain satisfaction in it: a lawn with a true edge in July, a black driveway at daybreak in February, and a house up the road that holds its footing no matter who is home.
