Manchester lies in the lap of Mount Equinox, where the marble sidewalks hold the last of the afternoon long after the sun drops behind the Taconics. Summer here is mowing on a slope, keeping a straight line across ground that never quite agrees to be flat, then edging a walk until it reads like a drawn margin. The Battenkill runs cold and green below the village, and by August the lawns along 7A have taken on a deeper color for it. Then the mountain sends winter down early, and there is a particular satisfaction in a driveway opened before the first car of the morning needs it.
