First light comes late to the West River valley, sliding down the ridges above Route 100 long after the birds have started, and that is the hour Wise Oak is already out under the sugar maples. This is tree work and ground work in southern Vermont: pruning and removals, planting and transplanting, support systems for the old limbs that lean over a dooryard, treatment and inspection when something in the crown looks wrong. Summer evenings stretch long here, and the shadows lie across hydroseeded slopes, mown grounds, and beds of seasonal flowers set against clapboard and hemlock. When the valley turns hard and white, the same properties are kept open — drives cleared, grounds looked after through the mountain months. What stays behind is the pleasure of it: a crown opened to the light, an edge held clean, a village yard that reads as tended from the road.
