Rugg Valley Landscaping works the steep, stony ground of the West River valley, out of South Londonderry where the road bends with the water and the Green Mountains lean in close on either side. Their landscapes are built the way southern Vermont builds: stone set with weight and patience, plant material chosen to flourish in thin mountain soil, mowing that leaves a hillside lawn reading clean and green against the dark edge of the woods. Compost and organic fertilizing go back into the ground, and between visits they keep an eye on the houses themselves — checking in, carrying off the trash, stacking firewood by the door ahead of the cold. Then January turns the valley white, and the plow goes out on driveways that pitch and curl down toward the highway, cutting them open again, banks squared, gravel showing, the day made possible before anyone is awake to see it.
