Up along Elder Hill the pavement gives out and the dooryards run right to the edge of the road — old stone walls shouldering into fern, a maple leaning over the mailbox, the New Haven River talking somewhere below. Ground Level Landscape works in that grain of Lincoln, Vermont: laying stone patios and walkways, setting perennials, native plants, shrubs and ornamental trees, cutting garden borders and edging, then finishing the beds with mulch that goes dark after the first rain. The design comes first — reading the site, thinking through drainage, deciding where a person would actually want to sit at six in the evening — and the planting follows the light. After that it is the long tending: seasonal pruning, weeding and soil kept in good heart, mulch refreshed before the heat, spring and fall clean-up hauled out of the beds. Under the shoulder of Mount Abraham the year comes on hard and fast, and there is a plain satisfaction in a yard that meets it squarely — edges crisp, stone sitting level, the whole dooryard let out into a long exhale.
