About Creative Gardens and Landscaping
In late April, when the Browns River is still loud with meltwater off Mount Mansfield and the ground in Jericho finally gives under a spade, the season opens for Creative Gardens and Landscaping. This is design-build work: gardens drawn and then planted, overgrown ground cleared back to its bones, screening plants set where a view needs softening, hillsides accented so a slope reads as intention rather than accident — and a yard of perennials, shrubs, fruit and shade trees to draw the plantings from. They lay bluestone and native Vermont stone into walkways, patios, paths and retaining walls, place boulders with the weight of things that were always meant to be there, and build water that moves — self-contained waterfalls, streams, ornamental ponds and fountains that keep their own quiet circuit going. The pleasure is in what stays: a stone path holding its line clean through mud season, a border coming back thicker each June, a dooryard that looks like the Green Mountain woods just past the fence line decided to step closer to the house. From Jericho and Jericho Center out through Underhill, Essex, Richmond and the Chittenden County towns, the work keeps its shape long after the truck has pulled away.
