Late on a Hinesburg afternoon the sun swings out over Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks go blue, then violet, and every mown stripe on a lawn throws its own shadow. The Blade Brigade cuts for that hour — mowing, trimming, edging and hauling off the season's leavings in spring and fall — because a lawn is never so obviously well kept as when the light comes in sideways. Sharp blades are the whole secret: a clean cut heals over by morning while a torn one browns at the tip. Anybody can shorten grass, but making a yard look deliberate takes attention. Around here, with that view out over the fields, the attention is worth spending.
