Hitchcock Property Services works the river ground of Hartford, Vermont — Wilder, White River Junction, Quechee — where the White River slides into the Connecticut and the hills stand back to let the valley breathe. Their days are spent on lawn care and field mowing, on mulch delivered by the yard, on spring cleanups and the long autumn haul of leaf removal, on excavating where the land needs reshaping and snow plowing when the valley goes white. There is a particular pleasure in a dooryard cut clean to its edges, in bark mulch laid dark around a foundation planting, in a driveway opened to bare pavement before the first commuter crosses the bridge toward Lebanon. The work reaches out from the A Street shop across the river towns — Norwich, Woodstock, West Hartford — and up into Hanover, Etna, Lyme, and both Lebanons on the New Hampshire side. Season by season, it leaves a place looking cared for, which is the whole quiet point of it.
