First light comes over the hills east of Guilford and lies flat across mown ground — the hour the name was made for. Sunrise Farm mows and tends lawns around town, from the tight yards down in Green River village to the wide open ones on the hill roads where the wind gets a vote. Grass grows unevenly here, thick where the springs run and thin where the ledge lies close, so keeping it even is a matter of paying attention week to week. There is an old pleasure in a field edge cut straight, in trimming tight around a granite post without ever touching it. By September the light turns gold at five o'clock and the last cuts of the year are the prettiest ones.
