Off the dooryards along Route 7 in Ferrisburgh, old stone walls run out beneath the maples and the clay-plain fields tip west toward Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks penciled faint on the far shore. Pleasant Valley Landscape Inc. works that ground the way it asks to be worked — lawn mowing, seasonal cleanups, bark mulch, garden edging, weeding and shrub trimming, and garden design planted with Vermont trees, shrubs and perennials that are given room to grow into themselves. They set stone, too: stonewall construction, campfire areas, walkways, patios and steps, plus mini excavation, brush clearing, and lawn and driveway installation and repairs, along with exterior painting and staining, pressure washing, siding and trim repair, and porches, decks and pergolas. Come winter, when the lake wind lays a hard white over the valley, the same crews are out plowing the drives back open. The pleasure of it is plain — an edge still holding its line in August, a dooryard cleared before the school bus climbs the hill, a yard that carries its season all the way through.
