Dirt roads climb out of the West River valley in Dummerston past stone walls half-swallowed in fern, past dooryards where the gravel runs thin by mud season and the hillside orchards take the first light of the day. A.S. Clark & Sons works in that ground — excavating and land clearing, driveways cut and crowned to shed water, trenching, cellars, septic systems, and the trucking it takes to move what the work turns up. There is a real and physical pleasure in a trench pulled straight and clean, in a drive that drains right through an April rain, in a cellar squared away before the frost sets into the hill.
