There is a morning every October when Indian Brook Reservoir steams and the hardwoods above Saxon Hill stand as still as a photograph. DJ's Tree Service starts the Essex day around then, when the air is sharp and the crowns are open enough to read. The work runs from the light end, dead limbs pulled out of a front-yard maple, a branch taken off the garage, all the way to a full removal beside a house, brought down in controlled pieces on line. Wind gets funneled across these flat fields with nothing to slow it, so storm calls stay steady: a top out of a spruce, a trunk over a drive, a tangle in the back acres. It finishes the way it should, chip truck loaded, lawn raked, and more daylight on the grass than there was at sunrise.
