Chelsea keeps two village greens, one north and one south, with the First Branch of the White River sliding past them and Route 110 threading the valley between the hills. Canonica Farm & Forest Services LLC works both halves of the year here — mowing, trimming and edging through the green months, mulch in the beds, cleanups in spring and fall — and plowing, shoveling and sanding once the valley fills in. The hill farms above town get the weather first and hold it longest, and their long drives are worth opening early. In July the smell of cut grass sits over the commons all afternoon. In February those same roads are silent at five in the morning except for one truck working its way up them.
