From the top of Mount Philo the whole of Charlotte lies flat and pale in winter — fields, orchard rows, and the long grey plate of Lake Champlain running north. Wind crosses the lake ice with nothing to slow it, and drifts rebuild themselves across the same open stretch twice in a night; the truck goes back.
