On a late-June morning in Burlington, the light comes off Lake Champlain flat and silver, climbs the brick streets toward the hills, and lands on a terrace where every joint in the stone was drawn before it was set. Wagner Hodgson is a landscape architecture and design studio working from 7 Marble Avenue, shaping modern, sculptural landscapes that read as one thought — context, program, form and material fitted together the way a valley fits between two ranges. The studio's work runs from private residential gardens to campus and civic grounds, mixed-use and hospitality settings, corporate landscapes and long-horizon master plans, carried by a deep bench in horticulture, natural systems and construction. There is a real pleasure in the finished thing: a courtyard that holds its geometry under October gold, a plaza that drains clean after a March rain, a planted edge that thickens year over year until it looks like it was always there. From Burlington and a second studio in Hudson, New York, they design ground that keeps its shape long after the drawings are rolled up.
