In the small hours after a January storm, the Old North End is all hush and streetlight, snow heaped on porch rails and the narrow streets drifted nearly curb to curb. That's the Burlington Pete's Snow Plowing is built for, plowing out driveways across the city so people can get to work, school and the grocery store once morning comes. Plowing in a neighborhood this tight is a matter of inches — the blade threaded between parked cars and porch steps, the pile placed where it won't bury a neighbor's spot. Once the blade lifts, the driveway sits open and black under the last of the streetlight while the rest of the block is still hunting for shovels. Burlington's winters are long; a plowed drive makes them a little shorter.
