Burke Mountain throws its shadow down over East Burke by the middle of a January afternoon, and the road up Darling Hill can gather a drift while you are still eating supper. Maple Valley Landscaping runs snow removal through that country — plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks, sanding the pitches that ice over between storms. Then the Kingdom turns around in May and it becomes mowing, trimming, edging and cleanups until the hills go red again in September. Working a town this steep means knowing which drives hold ice and which lawns dry out first, and that knowing is most of the job. A cleared drive at dawn and a cut lawn in July come from the same habit of turning up.
