Barre's light comes in off the granite — pale and wide over the hills above the Winooski branch, sharp through October, low and blue by four o'clock in January — and the work here answers it hour by hour. Bellavance Landworks moves earth and shapes ground across central Vermont: excavation and site work, septic systems and utilities, drainage cut so the spring runoff goes where it's told, demolition, material hauling, paving and concrete, driveways and parking lots built or brought back to true. Then the softer half of the trade — landscape design and construction, hardscaping, brush and tree removal, hydroseeding and sod, field mowing and brush hogging, lawn care for the houses on the hill roads and the commercial lots down in town. When a storm banks up along the ridgelines, it becomes snow and ice management: a lot swept clear and treated while the streets are still dark. There is a plain, physical pleasure in all of it — a bank that holds, a driveway that drains, a lawn coming in green over ground that was raw mud in April.
