Addison sits on the clay plain between the lake and the mountains, with sky on all four sides and little to break the wind. In summer LeCompte Landscaping mows and trims the long open yards along Routes 17 and 22A, the Adirondacks standing blue across the water while the deck works its way down a field-sized lawn. Winter turns that same openness into the problem: snow off Champlain does not fall so much as travel, and a drive plowed at midnight can be closed again by four. So the truck goes back — blade, shovel on the walk, sand where the grade tips toward the road. Cleanups at either end of the year finish the circle, and between them a place stays in hand.
