Snow doesn't so much arrive in Waynesboro as descend — it comes down off Afton Mountain in the dark, riding the grade where Route 250 climbs toward Rockfish Gap, and by four in the morning the driveways on the east side have gone soft and white. Valley Landscaping is out in it before the first commuter has thought about that climb, plowing and shoveling until every apron and walk is scraped back to bare pavement and salted against the refreeze. Come April the trucks trade blades for mowers and the work turns to weekly cuts, tidy borders, and grass held at an even height on lawns that run right up to the foot of the ridge. There is a particular pride in a yard mown in true lines while the mountain behind it is still blue with morning haze. Winter or summer, the measure is the same: a property that looks looked-after from the road.
