Out toward Sandbridge the wind carries salt across the dune grass, and the Back Bay marshes fill in winter with swans that seem to have brought the cold down with them. Hunter's Lawn & Landscape works this southern edge of Virginia Beach year round: mowing and trimming through the long green stretch from April to October, then standing by for the two or three mornings a winter when ice or snow actually finds the coast. On those mornings it is plowing and shoveling, salt down on the walk, the driveway opened up so a car can get out and the day can start. The rest of the year it is edges held straight and clippings cleared. Both jobs come down to the same thing — a property that is easy to come home to, whatever the sky is doing.
