The Jefferson National Forest presses close on three sides, so lawns up here are small clearings held against the woods, and holding them is the job. There is a plain pleasure in a yard that has been kept: lines running true, borders crisp, nothing shaggy left at the fence. Rain finds this side of Smyth County often, which means the grass never really relents, and neither does the mower.
