Under the grass in this valley there is limestone — the reason the pastures roll the way they do around Stuarts Draft, and the reason a lawn here has its own opinions about water. Fellows Lawn and Hardscapes learns each yard's habits and mows to them: shorter where the ground drains hard and stays thin, higher where the soil holds and the turf wants to run. October is a good month for it, the maples going, the air cool enough to work all day, the clippings and leaves cleared off before they mat down and smother what is underneath. A lawn put to bed properly in fall is a lawn that comes back willing. That is the part nobody watches and everybody notices in April.
