Three in the morning on the Route 28 corridor, and the parking lots are empty sheets of white with the light poles throwing long cones through the falling snow. Pro-Pave, Inc. runs those hours: plows pushing the lots into clean stacks, spreaders laying salt down the drive aisles and across the entrances, walks opened to bare pavement. By the time the first cars swing in off Sterling Boulevard the whole thing looks like nothing happened, which is precisely the point. Ice control keeps going through the freeze that follows a storm, because the refreeze is the part that hurts. Winter here is won overnight or not at all.
