The old Washington & Old Dominion rail bed runs straight through Sterling, and on July evenings it carries the smell of fresh-cut grass the length of a mile. A Cut Above works the yards on either side of that green line, mowing, trimming and edging until the border between turf and walk is a single clean stroke you could follow with a finger. Loudoun's fescue comes up fast in May and turns stubborn by August, and both moods get the same attention. When the first real storm crosses the Piedmont, the mower gives way to the plow, and those same driveways are open before anyone reaches Route 7. There is a plain satisfaction in leaving a place looking cared for, whichever half of the year it is.
