In October the water at Buggs Island Lake goes slate under a low sky, and the shoreline yards around South Hill start letting go of their leaves. This landscaping work is timed to that turn — final mowings, leaves gathered and hauled, beds cut back and mulched before the first hard frost. Warm months run on mowing, edging, trimming and hedge work that keeps a sight line open toward the water. There is something satisfying about a lakeside lot put in order: grass held short, borders defined, nothing left loose to blow into the cove. The lake will take back the light, and the yard is ready for it.
