Every few winters the Tidewater goes silent under two or three inches, and the peanut ground out toward Zuni and Walters lies flat and white to the treeline. Nature's Touch LLC is up before that view has anybody in it, plowing driveways and lots around Smithfield, cutting walks down to bare concrete, spreading salt on the shaded stretches where ice hangs on longest. Snow here is heavy and wet and mostly gone in a day or two, so everything depends on getting to it early. Nobody plans a whole season around a storm like that, which is exactly why somebody has to be ready for it. By mid-morning the drives are open and the county gets on with its day.
