About Old Mowing Goats

The Jackson River carries fog up the narrow valley at Selma most summer mornings, and the mountains on both sides keep the sun off the grass until it is good and ready. Old Mowing Goats works those Alleghany Highlands yards — mowing, trimming, edging and the seasonal cleanups that follow the growing season up and back down again. Ground here is rarely level and rarely simple: shade on one side, full sun on the other, and turf growing in two different moods within the same lawn. The name is a joke, mostly. The cut is not — straight lines, tight trim around every post and stone, and a yard that looks tended when the evening train comes through.
