The James swings through a broad bend at Scottsville, and this little river town has spent two centuries learning to live beside that water; the canal boats are long gone, and a levee now stands guard over the brick storefronts downtown. Winter brings a gentler visitor. On a January evening, as snow drifts down over the bend and the hills of southern Albemarle go dim, J and J Landscaping turns to snow removal, with plows on the driveways and shovels on the walks, so Scottsville wakes to open ground. Seen from the levee at dusk, with lamplight in old windows and a shoveled path running up to a door, the town looks made for this weather.
