Down in the river bottom off Riverside Drive the pawpaws hang heavy in September, and the flats near Pony Pasture stay green long after the uplands have gone tan. Paw Paw Landscaping works that whole seam of the city, mowing, edging, trimming and carrying off leaf litter through the growing months, then plowing and salting drives, walks and lots when a January storm slides up from the south. River air holds cold in the low ground, so ice lingers there after the hilltops have given it up. Both halves of the year come down to the same thing: ground that has been looked after. The mowed line along a fence and the cleared line down a driveway are cousins.
