Early on a Stratford Hills morning the fog comes up off the James near the Huguenot flatwater and hangs in the low yards until the sun burns through around nine. Cartwright Landscaping starts on the high ground and works down as it clears — mowing, edging along the drives, trimming the sloped edges where the ground drops toward the river, and clearing the cut so nothing washes into the street with the next rain. Yards on this side of town run uneven and shaded, and they reward patience more than speed. In late fall the leaf load is heavy and it all comes off before winter. A finished lawn above that river bend is a good thing to stand and look at.
