At two in the morning, when the sleet has stopped and the lots down by the interstate split lie under a single unbroken sheet, the plows go out. MD Operations handles snow and ice for Petersburg — plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, spreading salt ahead of the freeze and again behind it. Virginia storms are treacherous exactly because they are rare: a half inch of glaze over the Crater Road hills will strand a city that would shrug off a foot of powder farther north. So the watch starts before the first flake, and the work is done in the dark. By the time the sky lightens the pavement is black and wet and passable, and nobody has to think about it.
