Massanutten Mountain stands like a long blue wall along New Market's eastern side, and summer storms often stack up on that ridge before tumbling down over town. Smith's Lawn Services mows and trims in their wake, when the grass has shot up overnight and the old Valley Pike is still steaming after the rain. This is ground that remembers: the fields where VMI cadets charged in May of 1864 lie just outside town, and people here understand that keeping a place looking right is a way of honoring it. In each yard that means an even cut, a straight line along the curb and clippings cleared from the sidewalk so the street reads neat from end to end. Late in the day, when the ridge throws its shadow across the lawns, the finished work fairly glows.
