The roads above Smith Mountain Lake climb, turn and climb again, and half an inch of ice makes most of them a poor idea. Barlow Excavating takes the steep ones — plowing long gravel drives, opening the turnarounds where a truck needs room, pushing banks back from the road edge, and treating the shaded pitches that never catch sun in January. Weather comes over the Blue Ridge and drops into Bedford County wet and heavy, and it can strand a whole ridge before daylight. Getting somebody down off that ridge and onto Route 122 before the buses run is a plain, useful thing to do at five in the morning. That is the job, storm after storm.
