Brick sidewalks are lovely eleven months of the year and treacherous in the twelfth, and Old Manchester has them by the block. Really Clean Streets handles the walking side of a storm — shoveling and scraping sidewalks, steps, stoops and building entries, then treating them so the melt does not come back later as a slick. Plows take the drives and the lots; this is the finish work, the surfaces people actually put a foot on. Wet Southside snow compacts fast underfoot, so the walks get opened while it is still falling and again once it lets up. A curb line cleared end to end is a small civic act, and the street feels different for it.
