By mid-July the cicadas own the afternoons in Amherst County, and grass in Madison Heights grows faster than anybody planned for. Fast pass mowing works straight through that heat — mowing, string trimming, edging, and hauling the clippings off — lot after lot while the shade pools under the oaks. A yard cut on schedule is a small kindness in a Virginia summer: the path to the mailbox stays open, the fence line quits disappearing, and the place looks like somebody is home. The route runs the flats around Amelon and up the rises toward Amherst, with a swing out to Elon when the week allows. Come supper the mower cools in the truck bed and the lines behind it are still holding.
