Catoctin Creek runs cold under the sycamores south of Lovettsville, and on a July morning the valley holds that coolness until the sun finally finds the bottom of it. Mustache Mowing is out in it early: mowing, string trimming around trees and posts, edging along walks and beds, clippings blown clear of the pavement. Mulch goes down in spring, leaves come up in fall, and the shrubs get shaped somewhere in between. The old German Settlement laid its yards out generously, and a big lawn cut in even passes is worth stopping at the gate to look at. From the village out along the ridge roads, that is the route.
