The Piedmont rarely announces its storms. One evening the sky over Linton Hall goes the color of pewter, and by four the next morning the streets off Linton Hall Road are under six quiet inches. That is the hour this snow removal work is built for: headlights on an untouched driveway, the first pass laying open a black lane end to end, the walk shoveled down to bare concrete before the coffee upstairs finishes brewing. Salt goes where the grade tips toward the street and meltwater likes to gather. By the time the neighborhood wakes up, the only proof anyone came is a driveway you can actually leave from.
