Winter in the coalfields comes down the mountain before it comes up the road. When a storm crosses the ridgelines above Haysi, the hollows fill white while the Russell Fork runs dark and loud between iced banks. Evergreen Contracting Corp works that weather in the dark hours, plowing steep drives and clearing the walks and steps that lead to them, because on these grades even a light snowfall can strand a house. There's a particular stillness to a mountain morning after a storm: headlights on the switchbacks, chimney smoke hanging in the cold, a plow blade scraping down to gravel. Evergreen's aim is simple: by first light, a Haysi household can back out and make it down to the road.
