About Humphrey utility work

East of Grottoes the land rises in long hayfield swells, and late in the day the light comes across them sideways, low and gold. Humphrey utility work keeps lawns in that country cut clean — mowing, trimming, edging, and the seasonal tidying a yard asks for between one growing season and the next. There is a plain reward in the last pass of an evening: grass laid down in even rows, the line at the flowerbed sharp enough to read from the road. The work follows the valley's own calendar — quick in May, steady through the humid middle of summer, patient when the fields go tawny. Homes and small properties around Grottoes end up with a yard that looks tended rather than merely mowed.
